Supporting the Courage to Change
"Before I came to Harborview, my life was ruled by drugs and alcohol. Nothing else mattered to me. I had literally lost everything - my family, my self-respect and any real hope that my life could ever be restored. Thanks to the support and wonderful care at Harborview, I am clean from drugs and alcohol. For the first time in a long time, I feel good about myself and who I am. I was given the courage to change - I feel like I have my life to live again!"

Our multilevel treatment approach and experienced staff helps patients acquire tools for lifelong recovery while receiving strong support through this challenging and deeply personal process."
- Michael Baldinger, MD, Medical Director, Harborview
In July 2006, Saint Joseph Hospital opened the Harborview Recovery Center overlooking Lake Michigan's Diversey Harbor in Lincoln Park. The Center, which is located within the hospital, is a 15-bed inpatient residential unit providing 24-hour care and treatment for patients with alcohol and drug addiction.
Chemical addiction is a serious cause of health disorders among people in the United States. Last year, 22 million Americans age 12 and older needed treatment for alcohol or illicit drug abuse and addiction. Of these, only 3.8 million people received it.
Last year alone, Harborview Recovery Center helped hundreds of people in our community find the courage to change and regain their lives.

Philosophy of Care
- We believe addiction is a disease that affects the whole person - mind, body and spirit. We treat primary addiction illness(es); additional psychiatric illness should be considered secondary or in remission at time of treatment.
- We believe the longer patients stay engaged in treatment (that varies with intensity based on individual need), the better the outcome.
- The care we provide should be individualized to best meet the distinct needs of each and every patient.
- We strive to successfully manage patient safety and risks at all levels of care and in all our programs.
- We assist patients in integrating self-help approaches (such as Alcoholics Anonymous) into their treatment in order to promote long term recovery.
- We are constantly seeking opportunities to improve the care we deliver by training our staff in current evidence based treatment approaches and new medical advances.
- We adhere to the American Society of Addiction Medicine Patient Placement Criteria to maximize both the quality and cost effectiveness of care.
Our overall goal with each patient is to keep them engaged in treatment and activities that support recovery, including aftercare, sober living residences, self-help, outside individual counseling, exercise programs, among others. We move patients as seamlessly as possible through less restrictive levels of care as they progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
